Customer called to find out what she could to do. Her computers one Laptop running sluggish & one tower that continually restarts and it was affecting her business dramatically. She had Norton AV suite, on both computers. In evaluating the problems over the phone, find that the systems are in fact infected!
She also wanted:
1. Try Eudora mail on laptop and get mail synced between the two computers.
2. Set up wireless Router with security and network the laptop & Tower computers
3. Share the two printers between her computers.
4. Check upgradeability of Laptop Computer.
She was going out of town and needed them back first thing next Monday morning.
Solutions Provided:
Laptop - Initial exam reveals many necessary OS services had been disabled by the Malware, including networking, printing & many more, re-enabled necessary ones.
- Initial Scans for Virus/ Malware/ Spyware: Adware 14, Malware 4, spyware 5 infections, Trojans - clickers - 4 infections in email (Eudora) My Documents QUALCOMM/ Attachment - removed same.
- Found that Norton Firewall, and Adaware were disabled for about 3 months.
- Uninstalled Norton AV Suite and Adaware, Removed traces of Norton (it did not uninstall itself correctly & was interfering with new Anti-Virus program.
- Incredimail (infected), Limewire (infected), Zoom Browser (Infected) Uninstalled & removed same.
- Tried Wireless w/Services enabled now works on shop router. Installed Antimalware/AntiSpyware Programs - Set to run automatically every day after updating.
- Updates installed for all Microsoft programs,
- Removed AdobeReader 5.0 installed most recent version, updated Shockwave & Flash players from Adobe too.
- Uninstalled all 4 old versions of Sun Java & Updated to most recent & secure one.
- Performed same basic services for Tower Computer.
- Installed New 256MB stick Ram for Laptop which now has 512MB Total.
- Laptop & Tower - Cleaned interior cooling Pathways
- Special price for removing Virus/Malware/Spyware, plus running disk defragment & scandisk - set them up to run weekly.
- Set up wireless Router with security and networked computers and printers to share.
